Following discussions at COSLA, the umbrella body for Scottish councils, about whether councils can afford to pay for the Government's free school meals proposal, Liberal Democrat Local Government spokesman Jim Tolson said:
"The COSLA statement makes it clear that councils do not know how they can pay for the Government's free school meals plan.
"Liberal Democrats do not believe that the Government has properly set out the outcomes they expect this initiative to deliver.
"Ministers have failed to make the case that this is the best way to tackle the problem of poor diet amongst many Scottish children."
