Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson Robert Brown MSP is calling for adults who buy alcohol for minors to face tougher penalties.
Figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats show that the majority of those convicted of buying alcohol for minors are let off with a fine. Mr Brown believes that adults found guilty should be made to help clear up the mess and damage that's caused by drunken young people.
Commenting, Mr Brown said:
"Under-age drinking is a really serious issue. Alcohol is often a key factor for anti-social behaviour and crime by young people. Some young people drink specifically to get drunk and some then go on to wreck chaos in their communities.
"Adults who buy alcohol for young people are irresponsible and stupid. They deserve more than just a fine - they should have to face up to the consequences of their actions.
"I want to see these adults helping to clear up the mess and damage that's often caused by drunk young people. I believe that would be a far more efficient deterrent than a slap on the wrist or a fine."
