Liberal Democrat MEP Elspeth Attwooll has backed new European Parliament proposals on duty free purchases, saying that they would be "good news for Scottish airports".
The plans, voted on today in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, would mean that travellers whose final destination is outside the EU can buy duty free at any stopover during their journey. For example, tourists flying from Scotland via London to another continent would be able buy their duty free in Scotland rather than having to wait and buy it in London.
Commenting, Elspeth said:
"These proposals are definitely good news for Scottish airports. Most long haul flights from Scotland require a stop over in somewhere like London or Amsterdam, so it will mean more money spent on Scottish produce at Scottish airports.
I'd now urge the European Council to make the changes as soon as possible."
