Liberal Democrat member of the Local Government Committee Jim Tolson MSP has demanded that the SNP Government take immediate action to clear up the confusion over when the new Energy Assistance Package will take effect and who will be eligible.
The Health Secretary has previously created confusion for those struggling with fuel poverty by changing and then re-changing the eligibility criteria for the Central Heating Programme.
Government proposals would see the existing Warm Deal and Central Heating Programmes rolled into a new service, the Energy Assistance Package.
Commenting, Mr Tolson said:
"The SNP's track record on tackling fuel poverty has so far been one of confusion and contradiction over criteria and eligibility.
"There is, at present, a great deal of confusion amongst the general public as to when the Government's Energy Assistance Package will come into effect.
"The Government must make sure that the new Energy Assistance Package is sufficiently well publicised. This will help to cut down confusion amongst the most vulnerable in our society about when it will come into effect."
