SNP must finalise plans for quota management – McArthur

Liberal Democrat Fisheries spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP has demanded the Scottish Government makes progress on finalising plans for quota management in Scotland.

In May, as it launched the quota management and licensing consultation, the Scottish Government promised to consult further once responses had been analysed. The outcome of consultation report has yet to be published.

Commenting, Mr McArthur said:

"Back in May Scottish Ministers introduced a moratorium on quota transfers, while it consulted on proposals for creating a unilateral tartan quota. At the time, it was argued that such an approach was probably illegal.

"Despite outspoken opposition from a number of fishing organisations, Ministers seem unwilling to reconsider their approach. More worryingly, fishermen are still in the dark as to what Ministers plan to introduce as of 1 January 2009.

"EU-Norway talks are due to conclude shortly and catching opportunities will then be set at the December Fisheries Council before Christmas. Ministerial promises to consult further on their intentions in relation to quota management remain unfulfilled. In the meantime, Scottish fishermen will not thank the SNP for treating their industry like a political football."

If you are a resident of the West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
