Commenting on the Association of Train Operating Companies announcement that more and faster trains will run in 2009, Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson Alison McInnes MSP said:
"Any increase in train services are welcome, especially a faster link from Glasgow to London. This will benefit both Scottish business and passengers, who for too long have suffered from overcrowding and an underperforming service.
"However, we must ensure that the increase in rail capacity is passed on to rural areas. Rural rail links to main transport hubs must share in this service improvement if Scotland as a whole is to benefit from a faster, more reliable rail network."
In addition, the opening of Laurencekirk station in Aberdeenshire was welcomed:
"The opening of Laurencekirk, the only new train station to open in Scotland this year, is a welcome addition to the rail network. It was only possible thanks to years of committed campaigning by local groups and I look forward to the day that we see trains running there for the first time since the 1960s."
