McArthur welcomes cod quota increase

Liberal Democrat Fisheries spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP has welcomed confirmation that the Total Allowable Catch for the recovering stock of North Sea cod will be increased by 30 per cent.

Commenting, Mr McArthur said:

"The Scottish fleet has led the way in implementing conservation measures. These are starting to deliver benefits in helping stocks to recover, albeit more needs to be done. I am, therefore, pleased that Scottish fishermen have been rewarded with a 30 per cent increase in the cod quota.

"This increase will, I hope, go some way to tackling fish discards, which are incredibly frustrating for fishermen and damaging to the environment."
